“The Ancient Capital of Nine Dynasties”
Luoyang was China's capital for nine dynasties over 1,500 years. It is the birthplace of Chinese Buddhism (White Horse Temple, China's first Buddhist temple), home to the magnificent Longmen Grottoes, and famous for its peonies — the 'king of flowers' in Chinese culture.

Insider knowledge, must-do experiences, and the stories behind each place.
Over 100,000 Buddhist stone carvings carved into limestone cliffs over 400 years (493–907 AD). The 17-meter Vairocana Buddha is one of the greatest sculptures in human history. This is where Chinese Buddhism reached its artistic peak. The site contains 2,345 caves and niches, 2,800 inscriptions, and 43 pagodas.
The West Hill grottoes are the main attraction. Visit the East Hill for a panoramic view of the West Hill across the Yi River — the best photo spot. Come in the morning for soft light on the Buddha faces. The Fengxian Temple with the giant Vairocana Buddha is the highlight. The night view with illuminations is spectacular.
Stand before the Vairocana Buddha at Fengxian Temple and understand that it took 4 years and 800,000 workers to carve. Cross to the East Hill for the iconic panoramic view. Visit the Guyang Cave — the oldest and most historically significant.
