Home to over 80 giant pandas, this is the world's leading panda conservation center. In Chinese culture, the panda is a symbol of peace and friendship — it has been gifted to foreign nations as a diplomatic gesture since the Tang Dynasty. The base has successfully bred over 200 pandas since its founding in 1987.
Arrive at 8am when pandas are most active and feeding. Avoid weekends and holidays. The baby panda nursery (open seasonally) is extraordinary. Photography without flash is allowed. The pandas are most playful in cool weather — spring and autumn are ideal. The red panda enclosure is often overlooked but delightful.
Watch the morning feeding at 8–10am. Visit the baby panda nursery if open. See the red pandas — they are equally charming and far less crowded. Understand the cultural significance of pandas in Chinese diplomacy.
