Everything you need to know before and during your trip — from visas to apps, payments to etiquette. No guesswork, no information gaps.
Getting Into China
China's visa policy has become significantly more open in recent years. Many visitors can now enter visa-free or with simplified procedures.
Visa-Free Transit (144h)
Citizens of 54 countries including USA, UK, EU, Australia, Canada, Japan, South Korea
- Valid passport with 6+ months validity
- Confirmed onward ticket to a third country
- Stay within the designated city/region
- No Chinese visa required
This is the easiest way to visit China for short trips. You can visit multiple cities within the 144-hour window as long as you stay within the designated transit zone.
How to Apply — Step by Step
Check Eligibility
Verify if your nationality qualifies for visa-free transit or if you need to apply for an L visa. Check the latest policy on the Chinese embassy website.
Prepare Documents
Gather all required documents: passport, photos, flight bookings, hotel confirmations, and bank statements. Ensure your passport has 6+ months validity.
Submit Application
Apply at your nearest Chinese embassy or consulate, or through an authorized visa agency. Processing typically takes 4–7 business days.
Receive & Verify
Check all details on your visa carefully — name, passport number, validity dates, and number of entries. Report any errors immediately.
Important Entry Notes
Registration Requirement
All foreign visitors must register with local police within 24 hours of arrival. Hotels do this automatically. If staying with friends/family, you must register at the local police station.
Health Declaration
Complete the health declaration form on arrival. Keep your customs declaration form — you may need it when departing.
Customs App
Download the 'Customs Declaration' app before arrival to pre-fill your customs declaration form and speed up the arrival process.
Currency Declaration
You must declare cash exceeding USD 5,000 (or equivalent). There is no limit on how much you can bring in, but amounts over this threshold must be declared.
