Overview

Zhouzhuang Water Town (周庄水乡) near Suzhou in Jiangsu Province is China's most famous ancient water town — a 900-year-old settlement built on a network of canals, with 14 stone bridges, whitewashed houses with black-tiled roofs, and traditional wooden boats drifting through the waterways. Often called the 'Venice of the East,' Zhouzhuang has been continuously inhabited since the Song Dynasty and preserves a way of life that has largely disappeared from modern China.

History & Background

Zhouzhuang was established in 1086 AD during the Northern Song Dynasty. It grew wealthy during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) as a center of silk and rice trade, with merchant families building elaborate courtyard mansions along the canals. The town's most famous resident was Shen Wansan, a 14th-century merchant who became one of the wealthiest men in Chinese history. The town's isolation — accessible only by boat until the 20th century — preserved its ancient character.

Cultural Significance

Zhouzhuang represents the 'water town' (水乡) culture of the Yangtze River Delta — a civilization built on water, where canals served as streets, boats as transport, and bridges as gathering places. The town's architecture — whitewashed walls, black tiles, carved wooden screens — is the defining aesthetic of Jiangnan (south of the Yangtze) culture. The painter Chen Yifei's 1984 painting of Zhouzhuang's Twin Bridges brought the town international fame.

Stay overnight — the town transforms after 5pm

We stayed in a canal-side guesthouse and the difference between day and night is extraordinary. After the day-trippers leave at 5pm, the town becomes peaceful and magical — lanterns on the water, local families out for evening walks, the sound of water under the bridges. The Twin Bridges at dawn are perfect.

The Twin Bridges from the canal level are perfect

The Twin Bridges are best photographed from a boat at canal level — the classic angle that inspired Chen Yifei's famous painting. The boat ride through the canals is narrated by the boatwoman and genuinely informative. Shen's House is extraordinary — the carved wooden screens are remarkable.

Wansan Pork Hock is genuinely delicious

The town is beautiful and the canals are lovely, but the food is also excellent. Wansan Pork Hock (万三蹄) — the signature dish named after the famous merchant — is genuinely delicious. The north part of the town beyond the main tourist area is more authentic and less crowded.
