Overview

Jiuzhaigou Valley (九寨沟, Jiǔzhāigōu) in northern Sichuan Province is one of the most visually extraordinary places on earth — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve famous for its multicolored lakes, cascading waterfalls, and snow-capped peaks. The valley contains over 100 lakes of extraordinary clarity and color, ranging from turquoise to emerald to deep blue, fed by mineral-rich glacial waters.

History & Background

Jiuzhaigou ('Nine Village Valley') takes its name from the nine Tibetan villages that have existed in the valley for centuries. The area was largely unknown outside the region until 1972, when a logging team discovered its extraordinary beauty. It was designated a national nature reserve in 1978 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. A major earthquake in August 2017 caused significant damage, and the valley was closed for restoration until 2019, reopening with strict visitor limits.

Cultural Significance

For the Tibetan communities who have lived here for generations, Jiuzhaigou is a sacred landscape — the lakes are believed to be the mirrors of gods, and the forests are home to protective spirits. The valley is central to Tibetan Buddhist cosmology in the region. The extraordinary colors of the lakes are caused by calcium carbonate deposits and algae — a natural phenomenon that creates colors that seem almost supernatural.
