Wuzhen Water Town (乌镇, Wūzhèn) in Tongxiang, Zhejiang Province is one of China's most perfectly preserved ancient water towns — a 1,300-year-old settlement where traditional wooden architecture, silk weaving, rice wine production, and canal life still thrive today. Unlike many ancient towns that have become purely tourist attractions, Wuzhen maintains a living community and active traditional industries, making it one of the most authentic cultural experiences in eastern China.
Wuzhen was established during the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD) and grew wealthy during the Song and Ming dynasties as a center of silk production and trade. The town is divided into two scenic areas: Dongzha (East Gate) and Xizha (West Gate). The writer Mao Dun (茅盾), one of China's greatest 20th-century novelists, was born in Wuzhen in 1896 — his childhood home is preserved in the town. The Xizha area was restored and opened to visitors in 2001.
Wuzhen represents the Jiangnan (south of the Yangtze) water town culture at its most complete — a civilization where water was the organizing principle of daily life. The town's traditional industries — silk weaving, indigo dyeing, rice wine brewing, and wood carving — are still practiced by local artisans. The annual Wuzhen Theatre Festival (October) has made the town a center of contemporary performing arts, creating a unique dialogue between ancient and modern culture.

I visited during the Wuzhen Theatre Festival in October and it was extraordinary — contemporary performances in ancient spaces, international artists, the town buzzing with creative energy. The contrast between the 1,300-year-old architecture and cutting-edge theatre is remarkable. Book accommodation months ahead.
The traditional indigo dyeing workshop is a genuine highlight — watch artisans create the distinctive blue-and-white fabric using traditional methods. The Mao Dun former residence is interesting for literature lovers. Wuzhen is more authentic than Zhouzhuang and the night scene is extraordinary.
